Key resource: CLTS Knowledge Hub Learning Brief: West and Central Africa Regional Rural Sanitation Workshop

The CLTS Knowledge Hub, based at the Institute of Development Studies, WaterAid, WSSCC and UNICEF co-convened a regional workshop in Saly, Senegal, 25th-28th June 2018 with support from AGETIP. The event brought together those engaged in rural WASH programming from 14 countries across the region (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo) alongside experts working at regional and global levels.

Key resource: Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) Immersive Research

Praxis, the CLTS Knowledge Hub at the Institute of Development Studies and WaterAid undertook an immersive research project to learn from the experiences of districts that had been declared open defecation free. The researchers spent three nights and up to four days in each of a total of eight villages in Madhya Pradesh (3), Uttar Pradesh (2) and Rajasthan (3), in districts which had been declared open defecation free (ODF).They stayed with families without a specific agenda learning open-endedly from lived experience, observation and conversations.

Key resource: Timely, Relevant and Actionable Reports for SBM

The momentum and scale of the Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin (SBM-G) is unprecedented. The speed of implementation means that the identification of gaps and finding answers to these in ways that provide practical ideas for policy and practice can have exceptionally widespread impact provided they can be timely, relevant and actionable. The trade-offs between timeliness and the time required for conventional academic rigour are vast. Fortunately, a range of innovations and approaches have recently been developed and applied in India for timely and practical learning on sanitation.

Calls for applications! Challenging Contexts for Sanitation and Hygiene Programming

The Sanitation Learning Hub at the Institute of Development Studies, UNICEF and WaterAid are commissioning a piece of work to review current approaches to implementation in challenging contexts. The aim is to map rural sanitation approaches and guidance currently being used in the sector which aim to target those ‘hardest to reach’ populations, drawing out any emerging lessons in order to provide practical guidance.

Equality, non-discrimination and inclusion toolkit

WaterAid has launched this ‘Equality and Inclusion Toolkit’ to help WASH practitioners leave no on behind. It introduces the most important equality, non-discrimination and inclusion principles, and includes practical activities, tools and checklists for you to apply to your work with partners and communities.

This toolkit, available in English, Portuguese and French gives real examples and many practical tools for all stages of the programme cycle and advocacy work.

Poster: Transgender-inclusive sanitation: Insights from South Asia

The WASH sector is focusing upon the 2030 global ambition of achieving universal access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030. But the needs of transgender people, however, have so far been neglected: ‘the use of public bathrooms, which are often sex -segregated, has been associated with exclusion, denial of access, verbal harassment, physical abuse and sometimes even the arrest of transgender and intersex individuals’ - Catarina de Albuquerque.

Menstrual hygiene management in schools in South Asia: Pakistan

This four page brief shows a snapshot of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in schools in Pakistan.

Various federal and provincial initiatives support MHM in schools: the National water, sanitation and hygiene in schools strategy (WinS); Baluchistan WinS strategy and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa WinS strategy. Appropriate curricula together with teacher training are needed at provincial level.

Female-friendly public and community toilets: a guide for planners and decision makers

The 'Female-friendly guide', published in October 2018 and written by WaterAid, UNICEF and WSUP, is designed primarily for use by local authorities in towns and cities who are in charge of public and community toilets. It's also useful for national governments, public and private service providers, NGOs, donors and civil society organisations who play a role in delivering these services.
