Stuart Gillespie is senior research fellow with the Poverty, Health and Nutrition Division of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and CEO of the Transform Nutrition Research Programme Consortium
Stuart is also Research Director of the “Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia” (LANSA) consortium, both funded by DFID. A british citizen, Stuart earned a food science honors degree from the University of Reading, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in human nutrition from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1988. Prior to joining IFPRI in 1999, he worked in various international agencies, bilateral agencies, and nongovernmental organizations on nutrition policy analysis, information systems development, and monitoring and evaluation.
Through most of the last decade, he specialized in action research on the interactions between HIV and food and nutrition security, and their implications for development policy and practice, having co-founded and managed the Regional Network on AIDS, Livelihoods and Food Security (RENEWAL) based in eastern and southern Africa. Gillespie was director of the International Conference on HIV/AIDS, Food and Nutrition Security held in South Africa in April 2005.
In recent years, he has coordinated the Agriculture and Health Research Platform (AHRP) of the CGIAR, and led the TANDI project (“Tackling the Agriculture-Nutrition Disconnect in India”). Past work has focused on understanding ‘what works’ in malnutrition reduction, scaling up community driven development, and developing methodologies for community capacity analysis. He has over 100 publications including eight books, eight monographs and numerous journal articles.
For Transform Nutrition
Stuart provides vision, leadership and strategic direction to Transform Nutrition. In his role as Chief Executive he:
- ensures active working links between all partners, the Consortium Advisory Group, the Department for International Department and other stakeholders
- strengthens links between research, capacity strengthening and communication
- has oversight of financial and resource management, as well as monitoring and evaluation.
Stuart will also be involved in an advisory role in research areas he specialises in, such as an enabling environment for nutrition.
