Transform Nutrition aims to strengthen the capacity of key stakeholders to demand, generate, share and make effective use of good-quality research and evidence
Building a legacy
Transform Nutrition’s legacy will be to transform thinking and to inspire action to tackle undernutrition. We’ll focus on the following three inter-linked capacities that are needed to prevent the neglect of undernutrition:
- the capacity to demand good-quality research and evidence;
- the capacity to deliver and share this research and evidence;
- the capacity to use research and evidence to help tackle undernutrition.
And we’ve identified three stakeholder groups who we’ll target:
- consortium partners;
- the research community;
- potential nutrition champions.These could be advocates for nutrition from all walks of life (politicians, celebrities, local officials, civil society activists) in our focal countries (India, Bangladesh, Kenya and Ethiopia) and globally.
Our approach to capacity strengthening
Transform Nutrition draws upon, and adapts, two approaches to classifying capacity (Brough and Potter 2004 and DFID 2010) . The resulting framework comprises:
- individual capacity, including tools and skills
- organisational capacity – ie, staff and infrastructure
- systemic or institutional capacity – structures, systems and roles.
The Public Health Foundation of India and Stuart Gillespie co-ordinate our Capacity Strengthening work.
Short courses
An important part of our capacity strengthening work are the week-long short courses that Transform Nutrition run in a variety of locations including the UK, India and Ethiopia. The course, designed for both for policy makers and practitioners, will take participants through new ways of thinking about undernutrition and what to do about it. Read here for more information.
Research on capacity
Transform Nutrition research focuses on capacity.
Research on nutrition-specific interventions focuses on capacity to scale up nutrition-specific interventions and to ensure that they are good quality.
Research on nutrition-sensitive interventions on seeks to strengthen the evidence base and the capacities required to maximise the nutrition-sensitivity of agriculture, social protection and women’s empowerment interventions.
And much of the research agenda on enabling environments asks questions about how best to strengthen leadership and capacity to help meet the goal of reducing undernutrition.
