IDS Contributes to New APPG Report on Population Growth and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights

Hilary Standing, IDS Fellow and Director of the Realising Rights Consortium, a major research partnership on sexual and reproductive health rights, has contributed evidence to a new All Party Parliamentary Group Report that stresses the need for improved sexual and reproductive health rights to achieve the MDGs.

'A lack of access to Sexual and Reproductive Health information and services leading to high fertility and subsequent population growth, particularly in the poorest countries, continues to pose significant challenges to development and the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). And high levels of fertility and population growth make it far more difficult for families and societies to overcome poverty.'

That was the message of the latest Hearing Report from the All Party Parliamentary Group on Population, Development and Reproductive Health.

The aim of the report Report entitled 'Return of the Population Growth Factor: Its impact upon the Millennium Development Goals' is to convey to governments and their partners that poor Sexual and Reproductive Health and a lack of attention to Reproductive Rights must be addressed, particularly in the poorest countries, to attain the MDGs.

The Report is supported by evidence from Hilary Standing, IDS Fellow and Director of the Realising Rights Consortium, hosted at IDS. The Realising Rights Consortium is a major research partnership that brings together researchers from several disciplines to focus on populations in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia with the greatest access and entitlement problems in sexual and reproductive health: the very poor, young people - especially girls and young women, and other hard-to-reach groups such as migrants and those most vulnerable to stigma.
