Pathways of Women's Empowerment warmly congratulate Professor Takyiwaa Manuh on her very well deserved award of an honorary doctorate in law at the University of Sussex summer graduation ceremony on 14 July. Takyiwaa has a long history of links to Sussex and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), and from 2006 was the West Africa Hub Convenor for Pathways. She is now Director of the Social Development Policy Division at the UN Economic Commission for Africa.  …

The Beyond 2015: Pathways to a Gender Just World conference held from 29-30 May 2014 celebrated and interrogated learning from the Pathways of Women's Empowerment programme. The meeting provided an opportunity for a group of feminist scholars, activists, and media and communication professionals to look at the trajectory the programme had taken from its initiation in 2005, to look at how research from the programme could influence the post-2015 agenda and to strategise on future directions for work on women's empowerment. …

This virtual IDS Bulletin on Challenging Patriarchy is presented in time for the Second Global Symposium on ‘Engaging Men and Boys for Gender Justice’, in Delhi November 2014, in order to contribute to ongoing political conversations, by highlighting significant articles from IDS Bulletins since the turn of the millennium. Much has happened since 2000, when Cornwall and White presented a first IDS Bulletin on Men, Masculinities and Development (2000), exploring how masculinities had been finding its way onto the lexicon and agendas of Gender and Development (GAD).  The queering of gender and its unsettling implications for our understandings of sexualities, pleasure and also masculinities in GAD, was forcefully presented in Cornwall and Jolly’s IDS Bulletin arguing that Sexuality Matters (2006).  More recently, a bulletin presented by Edström, Das and Dolan aimed at Undressing Patriarchy (2014) and connected perspectives from feminist, sexual rights and masculinities fields to explore the topic in a direction of intersectionality and deeper structures of constraint to gender equality. …

A new working paper by Andrea Cornwall for UNU-WIDER revisits foundational feminist work on the concept of empowerment from the 1980s and 1990s.
