Future Health Systems
This film, produced by FHS partner Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), highlights the challenges that women with disabilities face when seeking maternal health services in the Eastern Uganda district of Kibuku. It explains how, to address some of these challenges, FHS partner MakSPH is using the Community Scorecard methodology - a participatory tool for assessment, planning, monitoring and evaluation of services – with mothers living with disabilities, allowing their voices to be heard.
Research undertaken by MakSPH, in partnership with Research in Gender and Ethics (RinGs), found that physically disabled mothers in Kibuku faced unique barriers in accessing maternal and newborn health (MNH) services due to mobility problems, unfriendly physical infrastructure, unresponsive midwives and low awareness of the MNH needs of women with physical disabilities. The community scorecard is expected to bring these issues to both the district and national agenda.
