Report from the National Workshop on Community-Led Approach in the context of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) in India

This report presents the main discussions, conclusions and recommendations of the National Workshop on Community-Led Approach in the Context of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan held at the Uttarakhand Academy of Administration, Nainital on April 16 to 18 2013.  The workshop was convened by the Key Resource Centre in collaboration with the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and supported by the Government of India and Institute of Development Studies, with facilitation support by Knowledge Links and input from the CLTS Foundation.

Developing and Monitoring Protocol for the Elimination of Open Defecation in Sub-Saharan Africa

Eliminating open defecation is increasingly seen as a key health outcome, with links to reduced stunting, improved educational and positive health outcomes for children. In Sub Saharan Africa, over 35 countries are implementing some form of CLTS, ranging from TATS in Tanzania to CLTSH in Ethiopia. Since the introduction of CLTS in 2005 in the region, rapid scale-up has been achieved with suggested numbers of ODF communities in the range of 30,000 affecting over 15 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Improving CLTS from a community perspective in Indonesia

Despite government commitment and progress in impriving sanitation in Indonesia, there are still around 63 million people practising open defecation. This report is based on the findings of a study commissioned by Plan Indonesia that explored the reasons why CLTS is not achieving more promising results in Indonesia and to offer recommendations to achieve faster and more sustainable results on the ground.

Taking CLTS to scale in Zambia

The Government of Zambia has adopted CLTS as their national strategy for improving access to improved sanitation and for meeting not only the MDG target but also achieving an ODF rural Zambia by 2015. A number of structures and processes have been put in place in order to ensure quality implementation of CLTS at scale and create sustainability.

Report from the CLTS and Scaling-up Rural Sanitation Side-Event at EASAN 3, Bali

From the 8th-9th September 2012, a learning workshop on CLTS and scaling up rural sanitation in the East Asia and Pacific Region was held in Bali. The workshop, organised by Jejaring AMPL Indonesia, the CLTS team at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Plan International, UNICEF, WaterAid, WSP and WSSCC, was a side event prior to the EASAN3 Conference. Over 60 participants from 14 countries participated in the side event. The workshop’s aim was to create a stronger community of practice for CLTS and rural sanitation in the region, and hence ensure quality expansion and scale-up of community-led approaches for sanitation and hygiene.
