CLTS in the Solomon Islands – the word is spreading…

The Solomon Islands has a reputation for being laid back and the smiling, barefooted airlines hostess that greets me at the grassy strip formerly known as Fera Airport, in Isabel Province, portrays this in typical fashion.  Coconut palms sway in the gentle breeze and as the 10 seater plane slides back down the muddy island runway, the hostess laughs guiltily from our transit boat, telling me that the plane came and went ahead of schedule, leaving passengers on the two boats heading our way stranded.  Nobody seems too phased.

National Guidelines for verification and certification of ODF communities

The Environmental Health and Sanitation Section of the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, n collaboration with stakeholders of sanitation and hygiene, has developed these guidelines to facilitate systematic verification and certification of ODF communities in order to encourage sustainable behaviour change towards sanitation and hygiene at community level.

National Guidelines for rural CLTS in Tanzania

These guidelines developed by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Section of the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, in collaboration with stakeholders of sanitation and hygiene,are meant to provide guidance to stakeholders in the country to effectively and uniformly apply the Community Led Total Sanitation approach in rural areas.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: Nine years of scale and innovation in Bangladesh

Between 2006 and 2015, the BRAC WASH programme in Bangladesh has helped over 39 million people gain access to hygienic latrines and 2.3 million people gain access to safe water across 250 sub-districts. It has helped to bring about a social transformation in areas where it works, with significant progress on rural sanitation particularly for the poorest families. Success has been achieved over a nine year period not only in the provision of hygienic household latrines, but in their use by all members of the family, and to a lesser extent in good hygiene practices such as handwashing.

Sanergy welcomes Kenya’s new sanitation policy

At the end of May, the Kenyan Ministry of Health launched the Kenya Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene Policy, 2016‑2030. The policy was the result of two years of collective efforts by various stakeholders in Kenya’s public and private sectors on the promotion of environmental sanitation and health. In this article, Sanergy welcomes the policy and summarises its four priority areas.

Sanitation in Bangladesh: Revolution, Evolution, and New Challenges

Bangladesh is a hub of sanitation experimentation and model-building. It is internationally recognised as the place where Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) first succeeded in eliminating open defecation (OD) from whole villages. This and other achievements rest on a broad foundation. After briefly reviewing the history of sanitation promotion in rural Bangladesh, this paper summarises the most urgent issues and challenges related to sustaining the country’s achievements in 2015.

CLTS Sharing and Learning at Brisbane WASH Futures (Report)

Report from the CLTS Sharing and Learning Workshop hosted by the CLTS Knowledge Hub on Wednesday 18th May 2016 at the Brisbane WASH Futures Conference. At the workshop, participants from different countries and organisations had the opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss ideas, challenges, innovations and to network with each other. Topics that featured prominently on the day were sustainability, equity and inclusion, monitoring, verification and certification.

Sanitation for all: Scaling up is hard to do

On World Water Day 2016, Jan Willem Rosenboom reflects on the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDGs for sanitation:

"The Sustainable Development Goals give us a second chance to get it right, but they seriously up the ante. Instead of “merely” providing half of the unserved population with access to improved sanitation, as the MDGs required, the SDGs tell us we can only declare success once every person, every school and every health facility has — and uses — safely managed sanitation facilities.
