The University of North Carolina (UNC), Water and Health Conference 2018 in Chapel Hill, United States, provided researchers, implementers and donors the opportunity to reflect and discuss how the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector is achieving sustainability, the biggest challenges to progress and possible ways forward to make sanitation outcomes equitable, accessible and affordable to everyone at all times. Report from State-level Rapid Action Learning Workshop in Bihar, India

A state level workshop to share, learn and plan with quality and sustainability in the context of Swachh Bharat Mission was organised by the Government of Bihar, in association with WSSCC and IDS, on October 29th - 31st, 2018. It brought together 75 participants from 10 districts of Bihar, viz., Katihar, Banka, West Champaran, Begusarai, Aurangabad, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Bhagalpur, Siwan, Patna and Madhubani. Seven of these districts are allotted to WSSCC by Government of India to support as development partner and remaining are the districts where Global Sanitation Fund was implemented.

ODF+, ODF++ and Sustainability of Sanitation: Thematic Discussion Series Synthesis

The clock is counting down to 2nd October 2019, the Government of India’s date to eradicate open defecation. It is quickly becoming clear the Government is looking at how to consolidate gains made in the past few years on sanitation and not being undone by slippages. As the mission has progressed, the sanitation coverage of rural India has increased to 94.73% and 19 states and UTS, 432 districts and 422,650 villages have been declared as open defecation-free (ODF). Still, there is need to construct as many 148 million toilets in one year (SBM MIS, 2018).

South Asian Regional Conference on Sustainable Sanitation Solutions

The Regional Sanitation Centre (RSC) for SACOSAN is an independent institution established by the Ministry of City Planning and Water Supply, Sri Lanka in 2017. The RSC has been legally constituted by the Government of Sri Lanka to fulfil its commitment made at the SACOSAN VI in Dhaka, Bangladesh.  The RSC in collaboration with regional partners is organising this conference from 25 to 27 January 2019 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Achieving District-Wide Quality and Sustainability with the SBM-G across Jharkhand

A regional Rapid Action Learning (RAL) workshop to share, learn and plan for the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission with quality and sustainability was organised by the state government of Jharkhand with the support of Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) in Ranchi on 18-19 September 2018.

Can direct benefit transfer strengthen the Swachh Bharat Mission? Learnings from three districts in Madhya Pradesh, India

In order to address some of the challenges faced in implementation of Indian government's flagship programme Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), the Madhya Pradesh state government introduced the direct benefit transfer of incentives to beneficiary households in 2016. This system uses an android application and web portal for digitising the processes, resulting in direct transfer of toilet construction incentives into beneficiaries' bank accounts.

Using immersive research to understand rural sanitation: lessons from the Swachh Bharat Mission in India

This WEDC conference paper focuses on an Immersive Research Approach designed by Praxis, IDS and WaterAid whereby researchers lived in villages in recently declared open defecation free districts, to gain an in-depth understanding of ground realities and community perspectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin. The study shed light on key aspects and dynamics influencing local ownership, behaviour change and construction quality, and also revealed multifaceted exclusion processes.

New WHO Guidelines on Sanitation and Health

The World Health Organisation have developed new guidelines on sanitation and health because current sanitation programmes are not achieving anticipated health gains and there is a lack of authoritative health-based guidance on sanitation. The new guidelines summarise the evidence on the effectiveness of a range of sanitation interventions and provide a comprehensive framework for health-protecting sanitation, covering policy and governance measures, implementation of sanitation technologies, systems and behavioural interventions, risk-based management, and monitoring approaches.
