Key resource: More or less: A rapid review of ‘water for toilets’ in rural India

Toilet construction is critical to ending open defecation, however most toilets built under Swachh Bharat Mission- Gramin (SBM-G) (clean India mission - rural) are water intensive. In the absence of piped water supply, rural households often rely on alternative sources of water or turn to open defecation (OD) or partial use. In such a scenario, water usage for cooking, drinking and washing takes precedence and using water for toilets becomes the last priority.

Key resource: Frontiers 13: Support mechanisms to strengthen equality and non-discrimination (EQND) in rural sanitation (Part 2 of 2)

Achievement of adequate and equitable access to sanitation for all, and an end to open defecation, requires that special attention is given toward disadvantaged groups. It has become apparent that the benefits of conventional rural sanitation programming and service delivery are often not spread equally, and risk leaving disadvantaged groups behind. This issue of Frontiers of CLTS (the second in a two-part series) examines the potential of support mechanisms designed to help disadvantaged groups access and use hygienic toilets in driving more equitable rural sanitation outcomes.

Key resource: Learning Brief: Men and Boys in Sanitation

Discussions of gender in sanitation and hygiene (S&H) often focus on the roles, positions or impacts on women and girls, who bear the greatest burden of work related to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Efforts to improve S&H and change social norms do not always actively engage men and boys in the most effective or transformative way. We must learn more about the roles men and boys actually play and – if necessary – how they can be modified to make efforts more successful.

Key resource: Men and boys in sanitation and hygiene: A desk-based review

This desk review explores existing literature and examples of men’s and boys’ behaviours and gender roles in sanitation and hygiene (S&H) and the extent to which the engagement of men and boys in S&H processes is leading to sustainable and transformative change in households and communities. We developed an analytical framework for the review clustered around 3 areas: with men as objects to change, agents of change and partners for change.

Key resource: CLTS Knowledge Hub Learning Brief: West and Central Africa Regional Rural Sanitation Workshop

The CLTS Knowledge Hub, based at the Institute of Development Studies, WaterAid, WSSCC and UNICEF co-convened a regional workshop in Saly, Senegal, 25th-28th June 2018 with support from AGETIP. The event brought together those engaged in rural WASH programming from 14 countries across the region (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo) alongside experts working at regional and global levels.

Key resource: Atelier régional sur l’assainissement rural en Afrique australe et orientale

La CLTS Knowledge Hub, basée à l’Institute of Development Studies, a organisé un atelier régional à Arusha en Tanzanie, du 16 au 20 avril 2018 avec l’aide de la SNV Tanzanie. L’événement a réuni les personnes impliquées dans la programmation de l’EAH en milieu rural dans huit pays de la région (Burundi, Érythrée, Éthiopie, Kenya, Malawi, Ouganda, Tanzanie et Zambie) aux côtés d’experts travaillant aux niveaux régional et mondial.

Key resource: CLTS Sharing and Learning Workshop, SACOSAN VII – Islamabad Pakistan

On April 10th 2018 the Institute of Development Studies, UNICEF and WSSCC co-convened a half-day Sharing and Learning Workshop in Islamabad, Pakistan, ahead of the 7th South Asian Conference on Sanitation. Over 50 participants from across region including those working in Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well as international agencies participated. This report contains key points from the lively discussions, together with research, innovations and recommendations for the SACOSAN Declaration.

Key resource: Timely, relevant and actionable feedback for stronger sanitation programmes

Rural sanitation poses complex and often intractable problems, and the momentum and scale of sanitation programmes across much of the South Asia region is unprecedented. The speed of implementation means that rapidly identifying what works, filling gaps in knowledge, and finding answers that provide practical ideas for policy and practice can have exceptionally widespread impact provided they are timely, relevant and actionable.
