Ebola Infections 17 Times Less Likely in Communities that Participated in Community-Led Total Sanitation (Liberia)

The study findings suggest that communities that reached Open Defecation Free status remained Ebola-free by adopting hygiene and sanitation practices, as well as other Ebola response behaviors that result in healthy outcomes, and that relationships, such as the use of Natural Leaders, may have played a key role in reducing Ebola risk at the community level.

Nutrition puzzles: the shit factor

A few years ago I posted a blog titled ‘Nutrition Puzzles’. Today, the puzzles seem a bit nearer to resolution. And the answer may be shit.

The earlier blog was prompted by the huge and massively expensive nutrition survey that was sponsored by a range of international aid donors. It showed to everyone’s surprise that, despite the crisis, nutrition indicators across Zimbabwe, including in rural areas, were not as disastrous as expected. Indeed, they were better than most neighbouring countries, including South Africa.

Liberian ODF communities did not experience transmission of the Ebola virus

Mr. deVries, Chief of Party of Global COmmunities described the fight against the virus and the Community Led Total Sanitation program as an incredible and challenging experience.He said with all of these challenges faced by his entity during his tenure, tremendous progress was made in the fight against the Ebola virus, especially in safe burial and the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) program. He also disclosed that communities declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) did not experience the transmission of the Ebola virus.
