The Camissa Multi-Stakeholder Statement on Achieving Access to Adequate and Equitable Sanitation and Hygiene for All and Ending Open Defecation in Africa by 2030

This multi-stakeholder statement emerging from the deliberations during the Fifth Africa Conference on Sanitation and Hygiene held in Cape Town, South Africa, February 18-22, 2019, focuses on progress towards achieving the Vision and Commitments of the Ngor Declaration on Sanitation and Hygiene in Africa.

It sets out the key issues of the sanitation and hygiene sector in Africa (see below) and the specific actions to be taken by each stakeholder group including Local Administrative Authorities, Development Partners, Civil Society, and Private Sector.

Despite Ghana’s progress in recent years — it is the fastest growing economy in Africa — it is one of the lowest ranked countries in terms of access to basic sanitation worldwide. Out of the total population, 10% use unimproved sanitation facilities, 21% have access to basic sanitation facilities, 13% practice open defecation and 45% use a limited or shared sanitation facilities.

Changes in open defecation in rural north India: 2014 – 2018

This paper reports on two surveys in rural north India. The first survey visited rural Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh in late 2018. It collected data on 9,812 people and interviewed 156 local government officials. The second survey, in Udaipur district, visited 505 households in 19 villages and 60 households in two census towns.
This new research sheds light on what the SBM did and on changes in open defecation since 2014. It is informative about changes because researchers revisited families who participated in a 2014 survey.

Tools portal for national governments on sanitation and water

Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) has developed a ‘Tools Portal’ to support countries and development partners to put WASH Building Blocks and Collaborative Behaviours into practice. This portal provides easy access to tools and resources aimed to help national governments and implementing partners strengthen the enabling environment for WASH.

Report from State-level Rapid Action Learning Workshop in Bihar, India

A state level workshop to share, learn and plan with quality and sustainability in the context of Swachh Bharat Mission was organised by the Government of Bihar, in association with WSSCC and IDS, on October 29th - 31st, 2018. It brought together 75 participants from 10 districts of Bihar, viz., Katihar, Banka, West Champaran, Begusarai, Aurangabad, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Bhagalpur, Siwan, Patna and Madhubani. Seven of these districts are allotted to WSSCC by Government of India to support as development partner and remaining are the districts where Global Sanitation Fund was implemented.

Promoting Rapid Action Learning in India

This year the Knowledge Hub have continued to collaborate with WSSCC and India state governments facilitating rapid action learning workshops. These events enable districts to come together to share, learn and plan for the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin. One workshop took place in Ranchi, Jharkhand, 18-19 September and another in Patna, Bihar, 29-31 October 2018.

Menstrual hygiene management in schools in South Asia: Pakistan

This four page brief shows a snapshot of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in schools in Pakistan.

Various federal and provincial initiatives support MHM in schools: the National water, sanitation and hygiene in schools strategy (WinS); Baluchistan WinS strategy and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa WinS strategy. Appropriate curricula together with teacher training are needed at provincial level.
