Dr Josué Ibulungu parle d'une stratégie WASH semi-urbaine en RDC [English subtitles]

Dr Josué Ibulungu (Coordinateur du Consortium SWIFT en RDC, Oxfam) parle du développement d’une stratégie semi-urbaine pour l’assainissement, l’hygiène et l’eau en RDC.   Cette stratégie adapte sensiblement l’approche CLTS pour être utilisée dans les zones semi-urbaines.

English translation: Dr Josué Ibulungu (Sustainable WASH in Fragile Contexts (SWIFT) Consortium Coordinator, Oxfam Congo) talks about the development of a semi-urban strategy for sanitation, hygiene and water in Democratic Republic of Congo. This strategy significantly adapts CLTS for use in for semi-urban areas.

Jirani sanitation groups: sustaining open defecation free status in Tanzania

The sustainability of open defecation free (ODF) status in rural areas where toilets frequently collapse is a global concern.  In Tanzania, SNV has developed an innovative approach called Jirani sanitation groups (JSGs). 'Jirani' means neighbour and the approach is based on community support; if a toilet collapses another can be built with the help of neighbours.

Sustainability and WASH: reflections from the UNC Water and Health Conference 2018

The University of North Carolina (UNC), Water and Health Conference 2018 in Chapel Hill, United States, provided researchers, implementers and donors the opportunity to reflect and discuss how the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector is achieving sustainability, the biggest challenges to progress and possible ways forward to make sanitation outcomes equitable, accessible and affordable to everyone at all times. (The UNC Water and Health Conference is held at Chapel Hill since 2011)

Report from State-level Rapid Action Learning Workshop in Bihar, India

A state level workshop to share, learn and plan with quality and sustainability in the context of Swachh Bharat Mission was organised by the Government of Bihar, in association with WSSCC and IDS, on October 29th - 31st, 2018. It brought together 75 participants from 10 districts of Bihar, viz., Katihar, Banka, West Champaran, Begusarai, Aurangabad, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Bhagalpur, Siwan, Patna and Madhubani. Seven of these districts are allotted to WSSCC by Government of India to support as development partner and remaining are the districts where Global Sanitation Fund was implemented.

Promoting Rapid Action Learning in India

This year the Knowledge Hub have continued to collaborate with WSSCC and India state governments facilitating rapid action learning workshops. These events enable districts to come together to share, learn and plan for the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin. One workshop took place in Ranchi, Jharkhand, 18-19 September and another in Patna, Bihar, 29-31 October 2018.

Below we share workshop reports, selected good practices and a guide for facilitating Rapid Action Learning workshops.

Menstrual hygiene management in schools in South Asia: Pakistan

This four page brief shows a snapshot of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in schools in Pakistan.

Various federal and provincial initiatives support MHM in schools: the National water, sanitation and hygiene in schools strategy (WinS); Baluchistan WinS strategy and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa WinS strategy. Appropriate curricula together with teacher training are needed at provincial level.

South Asian Regional Conference on Sustainable Sanitation Solutions

The Regional Sanitation Centre (RSC) for SACOSAN is an independent institution established by the Ministry of City Planning and Water Supply, Sri Lanka in 2017. The RSC has been legally constituted by the Government of Sri Lanka to fulfil its commitment made at the SACOSAN VI in Dhaka, Bangladesh.  The RSC in collaboration with regional partners is organising this conference from 25 to 27 January 2019 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Achieving District-Wide Quality and Sustainability with the SBM-G across Jharkhand

A regional Rapid Action Learning (RAL) workshop to share, learn and plan for the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission with quality and sustainability was organised by the state government of Jharkhand with the support of Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) in Ranchi on 18-19 September 2018.
