On World Toilet Day, UN Highlights Human Rights Challenge for SDG Target 6.2

The UN, governments and civil society observed World Toilet Day 2017, with messages focused on the theme, ‘Toilets and Wastewater,’ which stressed the need for safe treatment and disposal of fecal waste. On the occasion, UN-Water, UNICEF, the International Chamber of Commerce and several governments reported on progress towards SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation).

While SDG target 6.2 calls for universal sanitation, 2.3 billion people worldwide lack access to basic toilet facilities. Prior to the Day, which is marked annually on 19 November, UN-Water launched a set of resources that could be used in conjunction with events to showcase the sanitation challenge, including a set of social media messages, infographics and short film.
