Report from State-level Rapid Action Learning Workshop in Bihar, India

A state level workshop to share, learn and plan with quality and sustainability in the context of Swachh Bharat Mission was organised by the Government of Bihar, in association with WSSCC and IDS, on October 29th - 31st, 2018. It brought together 75 participants from 10 districts of Bihar, viz., Katihar, Banka, West Champaran, Begusarai, Aurangabad, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Bhagalpur, Siwan, Patna and Madhubani. Seven of these districts are allotted to WSSCC by Government of India to support as development partner and remaining are the districts where Global Sanitation Fund was implemented.

Poster: Transgender-inclusive sanitation: Insights from South Asia

The WASH sector is focusing upon the 2030 global ambition of achieving universal access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030. But the needs of transgender people, however, have so far been neglected: ‘the use of public bathrooms, which are often sex -segregated, has been associated with exclusion, denial of access, verbal harassment, physical abuse and sometimes even the arrest of transgender and intersex individuals’ - Catarina de Albuquerque.

Promoting Rapid Action Learning in India

This year the Knowledge Hub have continued to collaborate with WSSCC and India state governments facilitating rapid action learning workshops. These events enable districts to come together to share, learn and plan for the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin. One workshop took place in Ranchi, Jharkhand, 18-19 September and another in Patna, Bihar, 29-31 October 2018.

Impact of social capital, harassment of women and girls, and water and sanitation access on premature birth and low infant birth weight in India

Globally, preterm birth (PTB) and low infant birth weight (LBW) are leading causes of maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Inadequate water and sanitation access (WASH) are risk factors for PTB and LBW in low-income countries. Physical stress from carrying water and psychosocial stress from addressing sanitation needs in the open may be mechanisms underlying these associations. If so, then living in a community with strong social capital should be able to buffer the adverse effects of WASH on birth outcomes.

Manual cleaning of sewers and septic tanks - policy brief

In December 2013, the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act (“the Act”) was notified by the Central Indian Government. The Act is a Parliamentary law, binding on all states. While an earlier 1993 law prohibited the employment of manual scavengers and construction of dry latrines, the strength of the new Act is that it brings hazardous cleaning of sewers and septic tanks under its ambit.

Menstrual hygiene management in schools in South Asia: Pakistan

This four page brief shows a snapshot of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in schools in Pakistan.

Various federal and provincial initiatives support MHM in schools: the National water, sanitation and hygiene in schools strategy (WinS); Baluchistan WinS strategy and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa WinS strategy. Appropriate curricula together with teacher training are needed at provincial level.

Mum's Magic Hands

Diarrhoeal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old. Handwashing with soap can reduce the risk of diarrhoeal disease by up to 48% but knowledge of its importance for disease prevention is not always reflected in practice. Oxfam, Unilever's Lifebuoy soap and Unilever's Chief Sustainability Office have developed Mum's Magic Hands, an interactive approach based on storytelling which uses field tested, emotional and health motivators to promote effective hand washing in communities affected by emergencies.

The widespread prevalence of unimproved sanitation technologies has been a major cause of concern for the environment and public health, and China is no exception to this. Towards the sanitation issue, toilet revolution has become a buzzword in China recently. This paper elaborates the backgrounds, connotations, and actions of the toilet revolution in China. The toilet revolution aims to create sanitation infrastructure and public services that work for everyone and that turn waste into value.
