Urban WASH programming in Protracted Conflict Contexts

Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for urban populations is one of UNICEF’s emerging areas of focus, highlighted in its Global WASH Strategy (2016–2030). In the Middle East, UNICEF is engaged in supporting urban populations affected by protracted conflict, either in their home cities or, having fled conflict, in locations to which they have been displaced. Provision of WASH services in these circumstances has presented the organisation with new and unfamiliar challenges as it seeks to ensure WASH for the vulnerable amid the devastation.

Around the world people are being treated in health care facilities that lack adequate water, sanitation, hygiene materials and the right waste segregation- essentials that make health care safe. In 2018 the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres issued a Global Call to Action on WASH in all health care facilities to address this problem.

Crossing continents: what can India and Africa learn from each other?

Proceedings from the 7th virtual conference on Menstrual Hygiene Management in Schools

The virtual conference on Menstrual Hygiene Management in Schools is an annual event that enables global sharing of new ideas and 'lessons learned', and connects people working on MHM in schools in a wide range of countries. The 7th virtual conference was held on 30 October 2018 as part of the Water & Health Conference, hosted by the Water Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the USA. The presenters covered work on MHM that spanned countries and regions across the world, identifying shared challenges in programme design, implementation, and monitoring.

Is Africa on Track to Achieve the SDGs on Sanitation? A review of progress on the Ngor Declaration on Sanitation and Hygiene

This report summarises the results of the Ngor Commitment monitoring carried out by 39 countries. The purpose of the report is to provide a baseline three years on from the Ngor Declaration on Sanitation and Hygiene. It provides an overview of the vision and commitments themselves and the actions required to make progress. The monitoring process captures the Ngor Commitments both in terms of whether the building blocks of the enabling environment are in place, and subsequently captures progress against country-specific targets.

Blog: AfricaSan 5: Financing sanitation and hygiene in Africa while leaving no one behind

The AfricaSan 5 Conference was recently held in Cape Town, South Africa. Every three years it reunites policy-makers, development partners, donors and the private sector to discuss some of the most compelling issues of the sanitation and hygiene sector in order to look for joint learning, new opportunities and shared paths forward. This post presents some of the main discussions about financing the sector in Africa that were featured during the week and concludes with some reflections on how the sector can be financed while leaving no one behind.

Blog 3 of 3: Accelerating improved sanitation in Africa through market based approaches

Last November UNICEF’s West and Central Africa Regional Office, Supply Division and WASH Programme Division convened a regional sanitation industry consultation in Abuja, Nigeria. The consultation brought together 100+ representatives from industry, financial institutions, governments and development partners. This series of three blogs is based on the discussions held on market shaping – including the current thinking, how it can increase uptake of improved sanitation facilities amongst the poorest households, and how it is being considered at the country level.
