What is BASIC versus IMPROVED sanitation in Malawi?

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

One page poster that summarises the key differences between BASIC and IMPROVED latrines, according to Malawi’s National Sanitation Policy (prepared 2008).

During CLTS, some community members initially build basic latrines whilst others move from open defecation straight to what can qualify as an improved latrine. The important thing to bear in mind is that in CLTS, the facilitators do not force people to have an improved latrine, but instead try to get them to see the added benefits of an improved latrine through the questions posed during triggering and follow-up.
