Key resource: Regional South Asia Rapid Action Learning (RAL) Workshop Report: Sustainable Sanitation and Leaving No One Behind

In 2017, 21 per cent of South Asia’s population practiced open defecation and only 57 per cent of households had a basic handwashing facility (UNICEF and WHO, 2019). Though vast progress has been made since 2017, those with a safely managed sanitation and basic handwashing facilities remains low while open defecation is still a huge challenge.

On Sunday 17th of February the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Knowledge Hub hosted an Africa Rural Sanitation Sharing and Learning Workshop prior to the start of the AfricaSan 5 Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.

Key resource: CLTS Knowledge Hub Learning Brief: West and Central Africa Regional Rural Sanitation Workshop

The CLTS Knowledge Hub, based at the Institute of Development Studies, WaterAid, WSSCC and UNICEF co-convened a regional workshop in Saly, Senegal, 25th-28th June 2018 with support from AGETIP. The event brought together those engaged in rural WASH programming from 14 countries across the region (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo) alongside experts working at regional and global levels.

Key resource: Atelier régional sur l’assainissement rural en Afrique australe et orientale

La CLTS Knowledge Hub, basée à l’Institute of Development Studies, a organisé un atelier régional à Arusha en Tanzanie, du 16 au 20 avril 2018 avec l’aide de la SNV Tanzanie. L’événement a réuni les personnes impliquées dans la programmation de l’EAH en milieu rural dans huit pays de la région (Burundi, Érythrée, Éthiopie, Kenya, Malawi, Ouganda, Tanzanie et Zambie) aux côtés d’experts travaillant aux niveaux régional et mondial.

Key resource: CLTS Knowledge Hub Learning Brief: East and Southern Africa Regional Rural Sanitation Workshop

The CLTS Knowledge Hub, based at the Institute of Development Studies, convened a regional workshop in Arusha, Tanzania, 16-20 April 2018 with support from SNV Tanzania. The event brought together those engaged in rural WASH programming from eight countries across the region (Burundi, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia) alongside experts working at regional and global levels.

Key resource: CLTS Sharing and Learning Workshop, SACOSAN VII – Islamabad Pakistan

On April 10th 2018 the Institute of Development Studies, UNICEF and WSSCC co-convened a half-day Sharing and Learning Workshop in Islamabad, Pakistan, ahead of the 7th South Asian Conference on Sanitation. Over 50 participants from across region including those working in Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well as international agencies participated. This report contains key points from the lively discussions, together with research, innovations and recommendations for the SACOSAN Declaration.

Key resource: Soutenir les moins capables tout au long de l’ATPC et au-delà

Depuis sa conception en 1999, l’Assainissement total piloté par la communauté (ATPC) s’est propagé dans plus de 60 pays et a permis à des millions de personnes à travers le globe de vivre dans des communautés ayant mis fin à la défécation à l’air libre (FDAL). L’approche se démarque de la programmation de l’assainissement à base de subvention qui débouche souvent sur une adoption inégale et sur une utilisation partielle des toilettes. L’ATPC a permis aux communautés de s’approprier le processus et de travailler collectivement à l’obtention du statut FDAL.

The CLTS Knowledge Hub and UNICEF convened an Asia-focused workshop titled ‘Supporting the Poorest and Most Vulnerable in CLTS Programmes’ in the Philippines in May 2017. The event brought together participants with experience of working on directly, supporting or researching CLTS programmes from across the continent.

Desde a sua concepção em 1999, o sistema de Saneamento Total Liderado pela Comunidade (Community-Led Total Sanitation, CLTS) alargou-se a mais de 60 países e o resultado foi que milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo passaram a viver em comunidades Livres de Fecalismo a Céu Aberto (Open Defecation Free, ODF). A abordagem afastava- -se dos programas de saneamento assentes em subsídios, que muitas vezes levavam a uma adopção desigual e a um uso parcial desse mesmo saneamento.

Key resource: Supporting the least able throughout and beyond CLTS

Since its conception in 1999, Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) has spread to over 60 countries and resulted in millions of people across the world living in open defecation free (ODF) communities. The approach was a departure from subsidy-driven sanitation programming which often led to uneven adoption and only partial use. CLTS enabled communities to own the process and collectively work towards becoming ODF. However, since its implementation at scale a number of challenges have appeared.
