Community engagement tools for sanitation planning (webinar)

An important area for capacity development relates to community engagement and the involvement of communities in the planning process of projects. Increasingly planners and government look to tool kits as a turn-key solutions but there is a need to consider what they want to get from the use of a toolkit. A number of planning tools are available to governments, these include SANDEC’s Community Led Urban Environmental Sanitation (CLUES) and Urban Community Led Total Sanitation (U-CLTS) from Practical Action, which has been applied in Nakuru, Kenya.

Toilet - Ek Prem Katha: Will this Bollywood box office hit help India tackle open defecation?

India's sanitation problems are now the topic of a new Bollywood movie entitled Toilet- Ek Prem Katha and thus far, the film has been getting rave reviews.

The film's storyline centres around a woman who leaves her husband on the first day of their marriage after discovering that he does not have a toilet. He desperately sets out on a mission to win back his love by standing up to the age-old traditions and values of India.

Real-time learning and documentation in CRSHIP

The Cambodia Rural Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement Programme (CRSHIP) aims to increase access to safe sanitation and promote the sustainable practice of key sanitation and hygiene behaviors in rural Cambodia. By identifying opportunities and challenges in real-time, the Learning and Documentation Team (also know as the "L&D team") was introduced in CRSHIP 2. This video explaining why it is important to have L&D in CRSHIP. Furthermore, it features changes, improvements, and achievements that this sub-grant has done so far within the programme.

SNV WASH - SAFI Latrine Training

SNV in Zambia conducted a workshop under the Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene For All Results Programme (SSH4A), funded by DFID, during which a total of 8 masons were trained on the Safi latrine, a technology developed in Tanzania In a bid to provide consumers with affordable and durable latrine technology options.

Sustainable Sanitation for All: Experiences, Challenges and Innovations (film)

This short film gives an insight into the content and making of the book Sustainable Sanitation for all: experiences, challenges and innovations, published by the CLTS Knowledge Hub and Practical Action on the 15th July 2016. The film includes footage from the writeshop in Kenya as well as interviews with Robert Chambers and some of the authors of the book.

A dirty secret

Almost two-and-a-half billion people lack access to an adequate toilet, and around one billion have no sanitation facilities whatsoever. Poor sanitation kills a child under five every 100 seconds. In this BBC audio documentary, anthropologist and broadcaster Mary-Ann Ochota visits Bangladesh and India to understand the challenges involved in achieving sanitation for all.

Teacher-Facilitated Community-Led Total Sanitation (Plan Ethiopia)

Community-Led Total Sanitation approaches started in Ethiopia in 2006 and have been widely supported by a range of actors. In recent years, the government has made the decision to make CLTS its official strategy for addressing access to sanitation. Recognizing the need for additional local support and to reduce dependence on overburdened Health Extension Workers, Plan International has been piloting and testing new approaches in training and empowering school teachers to act as CLTS facilitators.
