Blog 2 of 3: Sharing the SHAWN Project Experience in Nigeria

Last November UNICEF’s West and Central Africa Regional Office, Supply Division and WASH Programme Division convened a regional sanitation industry consultation in Abuja, Nigeria. The consultation brought together 100+ representatives from industry, financial institutions, governments and development partners. This series of three blogs is based on the discussions held on market shaping – including the current thinking, how it can increase uptake of improved sanitation facilities amongst the poorest households, and how it is being considered at the country level.

Blog 1 of 3: Opportunities for market shaping in West and Central Africa

WCAR Sanitation Industry Consultation

This consultation convened by UNICEF in Abuja, Nigeria from 13-15 November 2018, brought together industry, financial institutions, governments and development partners to discuss shaping sanitation markets in the West and Central Africa Region, with a focus on three countries: Ghana, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. This brief summarises the key points raised and next steps moving forward to strengthen sanitation markets in the region.

Dr Josué Ibulungu parle d'une stratégie WASH semi-urbaine en RDC [English subtitles]

Dr Josué Ibulungu (Coordinateur du Consortium SWIFT en RDC, Oxfam) parle du développement d’une stratégie semi-urbaine pour l’assainissement, l’hygiène et l’eau en RDC.   Cette stratégie adapte sensiblement l’approche CLTS pour être utilisée dans les zones semi-urbaines.

English translation: Dr Josué Ibulungu (Sustainable WASH in Fragile Contexts (SWIFT) Consortium Coordinator, Oxfam Congo) talks about the development of a semi-urban strategy for sanitation, hygiene and water in Democratic Republic of Congo. This strategy significantly adapts CLTS for use in for semi-urban areas.

Adama Sy parle du les Caisses de Solidarité Villageoise (Sénégal) [English subtitles]

Adama Sy (Responsable de programme, Agetip, Sénégal) parle d’une initiative locale, les Caisses de Solidarité Villageoise, auxquelles toutes les personnes au sein d’un même village contribuent, même les plus démunies. Le  but de cette initiative est de pouvoir soutenir financièrement tous les villageois à construire des latrines et à y accéder. Une fois que le statut FDAL est atteint les caisses continuent de soutenir les gens à construire des latrines améliorées.

Hunter-Gatherer notes

The Hunter-Gatherer process:

Hunter-gathering is a participatory process of rapidly collecting and collating information, experiences and contributions. In the two regional Africa workshops we facilitated in 2018, hunter-gatherers self-selected a sanitation topic they were most interested in championing and worked together in small self-selected groups. During the week the groups collected information by taking notes in relevant sessions, interviewing key people and informally through chatting in breaks and meals.
