Plan International supports Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) implementation in a number of districts in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR). In this learning brief, we review Plan International Laos’ CLTS activities. We found that they have formed a strong working relationship with the national government and directly involved district government and community leaders in CLTS implementation.

This learning brief by the Water Institute at UNC presents the roles of local actors in Plan International’s CLTS program activities In Cambodia and highlight considerations for scalability, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Raising awareness on open defecation in Indonesia

Indonesia has a massive problem of open defecation. The WHO/UNICEF JMP reports estimates that there are around 55 million people practicing open defecation in the country, or one quarter approximately of the population. This is the second highest country total, after India. Open defecation is mostly by the poorest populations and they bear the heaviest burden. Children – already vulnerable and marginalized - pay the highest price in respect of their survival and development. This well-established traditional behaviour is deeply ingrained through practice from early childhood.

Disability Inclusion in WASH: What has been achieved and how can this help other practitioners?

Plan Indonesia’s water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programme features the use of Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and hygiene promotion projects in several districts in Indonesia. To contribute to universal access and to reach the most vulnerable people, Plan Indonesia seeks to continuously improve disability inclusive strategies within its WASH programme.

Negros Oriental (Philippines) vows to end open defecation

Assessment report on the application of Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) for Mong community in Dien Bien Province, Vietnam

Research report from a study undertaken in three communes in Dien Bien Province where Mong people live.
