Key resource: Regional South Asia Rapid Action Learning (RAL) Workshop Report: Sustainable Sanitation and Leaving No One Behind

In 2017, 21 per cent of South Asia’s population practiced open defecation and only 57 per cent of households had a basic handwashing facility (UNICEF and WHO, 2019). Though vast progress has been made since 2017, those with a safely managed sanitation and basic handwashing facilities remains low while open defecation is still a huge challenge.

The Equality and Non-discrimination (EQND) and Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Handbook provides practical guidance for ensuring that behaviour change interventions leave no one behind. Drawing on experience from across the sector, this handbook is specifically targeted towards those implementing or supervising CLTS interventions at the community level.

Key resource: CLTS Knowledge Hub Learning Brief: West and Central Africa Regional Rural Sanitation Workshop

The CLTS Knowledge Hub, based at the Institute of Development Studies, WaterAid, WSSCC and UNICEF co-convened a regional workshop in Saly, Senegal, 25th-28th June 2018 with support from AGETIP. The event brought together those engaged in rural WASH programming from 14 countries across the region (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo) alongside experts working at regional and global levels.

Key resource: Convening and Facilitating Rapid Action Learning Workshops for the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin (SBM-G)

These guidance notes intend to inform and support all who seek to sponsor, convene, facilitate and report on Rapid Action Learning (RAL) workshops anywhere in India and to contribute to the quality, sustainability and timely implementation of the national Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin (SBM-G) campaign (this translates to clean India mission).

Key resource: CLTS Sharing and Learning Workshop, SACOSAN VII – Islamabad Pakistan

On April 10th 2018 the Institute of Development Studies, UNICEF and WSSCC co-convened a half-day Sharing and Learning Workshop in Islamabad, Pakistan, ahead of the 7th South Asian Conference on Sanitation. Over 50 participants from across region including those working in Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well as international agencies participated. This report contains key points from the lively discussions, together with research, innovations and recommendations for the SACOSAN Declaration.

Report from State-level Rapid Action Learning Workshop in Bihar, India

A state level workshop to share, learn and plan with quality and sustainability in the context of Swachh Bharat Mission was organised by the Government of Bihar, in association with WSSCC and IDS, on October 29th - 31st, 2018. It brought together 75 participants from 10 districts of Bihar, viz., Katihar, Banka, West Champaran, Begusarai, Aurangabad, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Bhagalpur, Siwan, Patna and Madhubani. Seven of these districts are allotted to WSSCC by Government of India to support as development partner and remaining are the districts where Global Sanitation Fund was implemented.

Promoting Rapid Action Learning in India

This year the Knowledge Hub have continued to collaborate with WSSCC and India state governments facilitating rapid action learning workshops. These events enable districts to come together to share, learn and plan for the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin. One workshop took place in Ranchi, Jharkhand, 18-19 September and another in Patna, Bihar, 29-31 October 2018.

Achieving District-Wide Quality and Sustainability with the SBM-G across Jharkhand

A regional Rapid Action Learning (RAL) workshop to share, learn and plan for the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission with quality and sustainability was organised by the state government of Jharkhand with the support of Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) in Ranchi on 18-19 September 2018.
