Using immersive research to understand rural sanitation: lessons from the Swachh Bharat Mission in India

This WEDC conference paper focuses on an Immersive Research Approach designed by Praxis, IDS and WaterAid whereby researchers lived in villages in recently declared open defecation free districts, to gain an in-depth understanding of ground realities and community perspectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin. The study shed light on key aspects and dynamics influencing local ownership, behaviour change and construction quality, and also revealed multifaceted exclusion processes.

Atelier régional sur l’assainissement rural en Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre : Note d’apprentissage

Le CLTS Knowledge Hub, basé à l’Institute of Development Studies, WaterAid, le WSSCC et l’UNICEF ont co-organisé un atelier régional à Saly, au Sénégal, du 25 au 28 juin 2018, avec l’aide de l’AGETIP. L’événement a réuni les personnes impliquées dans la programmation de l’eau, l’assainissement et l’hygiène (EAH) en milieu rural dans 14 pays de la région (Bénin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Gambie, Ghana, Libéria, Mali, Mauritanie, Niger, Nigéria, République Démocratique du Congo (RDC), Sénégal, Tchad et Togo) aux côtés d’experts travaillant aux niveaux régional et mondial.

Challenging gender norms to achieve sustainable sanitation

At the beginning of 2018, the CLTS Knowledge Hub based at the Institute of Development Studies released a call for applications for a desk-based study looking at ‘the other side of gender’. The idea came out of discussions with different sanitation and hygiene (WASH) actors who felt that despite gender relations being regarded as socially constructed power relations between men and women, boys and girls - gender in WASH discussions was often being reduced to the roles and experiences of women and sometimes only to menstrual hygiene management (MHM).

Reflections on the CLTS Knowledge Hub’s Sharing and Learning Workshop

I attended the 'CLTS Sharing and Learning Workshop' organised by the CLTS Knowledge Hub on 8th July, 2018 at Nakuru, Kenya – the day before the WEDC conference started. The workshop saw an interesting mix of participants including policymakers, practitioners, researchers and social entrepreneurs. Participants identified three broad themes for the day and then shared their experiences on these.

Reflections on the West and Central Africa Regional Rural Sanitation Workshop

Flying into Dakar, Senegal, for the start of the four day West and Central Africa Regional Rural Sanitation Workshop, hosted by the CLTS Knowledge Hub, Institute of Development Studies (IDS), I was struck by the arid landscape that we flew over. The vast vista was dominated by dry red soils and parched vegetation; a timely reminder of the water scarcity and food security problems faced by many countries in West and Central Africa (despite an abundance of human and natural resources).

Regional Africa sharing and learning workshops 2018

We have brought together a mix of useful resources produced in connection with the two essential Africa focused CLTS Knowledge Hub workshops we ran this year. Both workshops aimed to highlight common sanitation challenges and share innovations across the region. The first workshop based in Tanzania brought sanitation experts from across East and Southern Africa, the second based in Senegal brought together those from across West and Central Africa.

Synergies, Trade-Offs and Support Mechanisms and Leaving no one behind: session at WASH Futures

The CLTS Knowledge Hub along with UNICEF, SNV and the Institute of Sustainability co-convened a workshop Synergies, Trade-Offs and Support Mechanisms and Leaving no one behind- ensuring equality and non-discrimination in sanitation on Wednesday 7th March 2018 as part of the WASH Futures Conference in Brisbane. The full day session looked at current thinking on the phasing and combination of other approaches, internal and external support mechanisms and how these interact with CLTS and other rural WASH approaches in practice.

Achieving District-Wide Quality and Sustainability with the SBM-G Across Uttar Pradesh

A regional workshop to share, learn and plan with quality and sustainability in the context of Swachh Bharat Mission was held in Varanasi on January 11 to 13, 2018. It was organised  by the Varanasi Division, Government of Uttar Pradesh in collaboration with WSSCC and IDS. It brought together 75 participants from seven districts of Uttar Pradesh (Bhadohi, Chanduali, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Mirzapur, Sonabhadra and Varanasi) across Varanasi and Vindhyachal Divisions. The workshop was designed to provide and facilitate a learning platform for sharing experiences and ideas between districts.

Soutenir les plus pauvres et vulnérables dans les programmes ATPC

La CLTS Knowledge Hub et l’UNICEF ont organisé un atelier centré sur l’Asie, intitulé « Soutenir les plus pauvres et les plus vulnérables dans les programmes ATPC » aux Philippines en mai 2017. L’événement a réuni des participants dotés d’une solide expérience de première main avec les programmes ATPC, en capacité de chercheurs ou d’appui aux quatre coins du continent.
