Live streaming of seminar with Kamal Kar: The Potential of CLTS in achieving an Open Defecation Free World

On the 20th May 2014, Kamal Kar, the innovator of CLTS, will be giving a seminar at IDS. He will speak about the potential of the CLTS approach in achieving the sanitation MDG with a special focus on Africa. He will highlight the progress made by nations in running the last mile until December 2015 and will also discuss second and third generation challenges of CLTS such as sustainability, waste containment and the politics of scaling up. For the benefit of those who are not very conversant with the CLTS approach, he will also focus on its key principles and methodology.

Reflections on the IWC WASH Conference in Brisbane

I have been puzzling to understand why I found this conference so energising and such a good experience. In part it was the choreography and facilitation by Barbara Evans and others – what a difference it makes to have inventive ways of involving everyone and keeping us awake with bits of serious fun, and what a difference when facilitators and presenters are on top of their topics, have new things to share, are driven by controlled passion, and really enjoy themselves. And maybe there is something Ozzie about this – welcome, openness, informality, climate.

Report from the CLTS workshop at SACOSAN V in Nepal

On the 20th October 2013, a one-day CLTS Sharing and Learning workshop was held in Kathmandu, Nepal, in the run-up to the 5th South Asian Conference on Sanitation (SACOSAN V). We were 45 participants, coming from different countries –with Nepal leading in terms of numbers of participants and India second– and with various degrees and kinds of experience in CLTS.

Blogwriting guidelines, tips and tricks

Many of you have a lot of experience to share on CLTS. But often, documentation and sharing is inhibited by the belief that it's difficult to write or that here is a right or wrong way of doing it. Blogs are a great and easy way to share your experiences, views, reflections and opinions as well as raising questions and starting discussions with the global community of CLTS and WASH practitioners. They can be short, informal and personal in tone and therefore easy for anyone to write.

CLTS Week…. Let’s deal with ‘Shit’ in Africa

I am in Lusaka Zambia participating in the Pan African Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) annual Network meeting. The first day was really exciting for me… first because I got to meet enthusiastic CLTS champions from East and West Africa and secondly, this year’s meeting is UNIQUE because we have participation of the Zambian government staff, partners, and a traditional leader (Chief) from one of the communities where Plan Zambia is implementing CLTS!

Report from SACOSAN V Conference

The fifth South Asian Conference on Sanitation –SACOSAN V– took place in late October 2013 in Kathmandu, Nepal. During four days, 400 delegates from all over the world, though the vast majority from South Asia, had the opportunity to , exchange experiences, learn and network around sanitation. CLTS was also present at SACOSAN V, and not only for being mentioned in some of the conference presentations.

The CLTS Knowledge Hub at IDS has launched a new publications series Frontiers of CLTS: Innovations and Insights on World Toilet Day 19th November 2013. This will be a series of short notes offering practical guidance on new methods and approaches and thinking on broader issues.

Reflections from World Water Week 2013

I enjoyed World Water Week. There were some good sessions, old friends and new people to meet, and a lot to learn. This year the theme was Water Cooperation: Building Partnerships. The bias to water was understandable but if anything stronger than usual – my rough count is that about one session in ten was on sanitation or WASH, but that was enough to keep you busy as sessions ran in parallel and much of the time there was something relevant to go to.
