As part of the 39th WEDC International Conference, the CLTS Knowledge Hub hosted a one day CLTS Sharing and Learning workshop on Sunday 10th July 2016 in Kumasi, Ghana. Participants from a range of different countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe shared their experiences, innovations, challenges and knowledge gaps in CLTS and WASH more generally.
Plan International’s eight country Pan Africa programme, though predominately focused on rural CLTS, also trialled CLTS tools in peri-urban and urban communities with the hope that country specific urban total sanitation models would be developed. Jamie Myers, Research Officer for the CLTS Knowledge Hub which was a partner in the Pan African CLTS programme, conducted rapid action orientated research on the peri-urban and urban activities across four countries – Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia.
To launch the 9th issue of Frontiers of CLTS: Innovations and Insights the CLTS Knowledge Hub hosted a free webinar on CLTS in Post-Emergency and Fragile States Settings on 21 July 2016
The CLTS Knowledge Hub at the Institute of Development Studies, with the help of Plan International Ethiopia, convened a three day workshop in Addis Ababa. The workshop titled ‘Using a CLTS approach in peri-urban and urban environments’ brought together people who had been involved in urban CLTS programmes to share their varied experiences and discuss what added value a CLTS approach can bring to the urban context..
This was the question being considered at a recent IDS CLTS Knowledge Hub event held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, organised with Plan International Ethiopia. This useful and productive learning and sharing event entitled “Using a CLTS Approach and Tools in Peri-Urban and Urban Environments” took place from 13th to 15th June 2016.

The CLTS Knowledge Hub (IDS, UK) is hosting a one day CLTS Sharing and Learning workshop on Sunday 10th July, 9.30-17.00, at the Golden Tulip Hotel, in Kumasi, Ghana, as part of the 39th WEDC International Conference. We invite those who will be attending the WEDC conference and anyone interested in CLTS to join us for this opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss ideas, challenges, innovations etc and to network. The workshop is free of charge and will include tea and coffee breaks and a lunch.
Bangladesh is a hub of sanitation experimentation and model-building. It is internationally recognised as the place where Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) first succeeded in eliminating open defecation (OD) from whole villages. This and other achievements rest on a broad foundation. After briefly reviewing the history of sanitation promotion in rural Bangladesh, this paper summarises the most urgent issues and challenges related to sustaining the country’s achievements in 2015.
Report from the CLTS Sharing and Learning Workshop hosted by the CLTS Knowledge Hub on Wednesday 18th May 2016 at the Brisbane WASH Futures Conference. At the workshop, participants from different countries and organisations had the opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss ideas, challenges, innovations and to network with each other. Topics that featured prominently on the day were sustainability, equity and inclusion, monitoring, verification and certification.
