Climate change is increasingly being recognised as a global crisis, but responses to it have so far been overly focused on scientific and economic solutions. How then do we move towards more
people-centred, gender-aware climate change policies and processes? How do we respond to the different needs and concerns of women and men, and also challenge the gender inequalities that mean women are more likely to lose out than men in the face of climate change? This In Brief sets out why it is vital to address the gender dimensions of climate change. It maps pathways for making climate change responses more gender aware and – potentially – transformative and suggests promoting a rights based approach to climate change. This is to ensure that climate change policies and processes draw on human rights frameworks as well as finding alternatives to market-based approaches. When market-based approaches are used to address climate change mitigation they should benefit women equally and not exclude or further disadvantage them.  Another recommendation suggests learning from people focused gender – transformative approaches at the local level and apply these lessons to national and international policy.  In this respect, the In Brief includes inspiring examples of local, gender-aware innovations in Colombia and India. The case studies have been produced collaboratively through participatory workshops, semi-structured interviews and site visits with FUNDAEXPRESIÓN in Colombia and the Community Awareness Centre (CAC) in India. FUNDAEXPRESIÓN plays a key role in promoting strong local networks to create resilience to climate change and CAC engages women and men in developing relevant solutions that empower women.

El cambio climático está siendo reconocido con mayor frecuencia como una crisis global, pero hasta el momento las respuestas a este fenómeno se han centrado demasiado en soluciones científicas y económicas. ¿Cómo, entonces, podemos avanzar hacia políticas y procesos sobre el cambio climático centrados en las personas y con conciencia de género? ¿Cómo responder a las diferentes necesidades y preocupaciones de mujeres y hombres y cuestionar las desigualdades de género que significan que las mujeres tienen más probabilidades que los hombres de salir perdiendo frente al cambio climático? Esta edición de En breve resalta por qué es vital ocuparnos de las dimensiones de género del cambio climático. Indica maneras para hacer que las respuestas al cambio climático tengan más en cuenta el género y sean – potencialmente – transformadoras. Incluye ejemplos inspiradores de innovaciones con
conciencia de género en Colombia y la India. Los estudios de casos fueron producidos en colaboración mediante talleres participativos, entrevistas semiestructuradas y visitas a FUNDAEXPRESIÓN en Colombia y al Centro para Conciencia Comunitaria (CAC) en la India. FUNDAEXPRESIÓN juega un papel clave promoviendo redes locales sólidas para crear resistencia al cambio climático, mientras que el CAC trabaja con mujeres y hombres en el desarrollo de soluciones pertinentes que empoderen a las mujeres.

Bien que le changement climatique soit désormais reconnu comme une crise mondiale, les réponses apportées restent souvent axées sur des solutions scientifiques et économiques. Aussi, comment s’orienter vers des politiques et processus davantage centrés sur les populations et sensibles au genre et
comment s’attaquer aux inégalités qui peuvent plus pénaliser les femmes que les hommes ? Ce numéro d’En Bref explore en quoi il est capital de rendre les réponses au changement climatique plus sensibles au genre et plus facteurs de changement. Il inclut des études de cas innovantes produites dans le cadre d’enquêtes auprès de FUNDAEXPRESIÓN en Colombie, du Centre de sensibilisation communautaire (CAC) en Inde et de Action Femmes du Bas Fleuve (AFEBAF) en République démocratique du Congo (RDC). FUNDAEXPRESIÓN joue un rôle-clé dans la promotion de réseaux locaux afin de créer de la résilience au changement climatique. CAC fait coopérer des femmes et des hommes au développement de solutions pertinentes qui autonomisent les femmes. L’AFEBAF travaille avec les organisations de femmes afin de lutter aux niveaux privé et public contre les effets de la déforestation.
