Where is the money for women's rights and how can we tap it? How could new resources be mobilised to build stronger feminist movements in order to advance women's rights worldwide? This report analyses the funding landscape for women's rights work, building on an earlier report published by the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) in 2006. Based on a survey of almost one thousand women's organisations worldwide, the report analyses funding trends, provides information on donors who fund women's rights work, and offers practical fundraising guidelines. Findings show that more than half the survey respondents are receiving less funding than in 2000. Organisations in the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and Eastern Europe are having particular difficulty raising money as funding has shifted to Africa. The report analyses the challenges women's organisations face in raising funds from different types of organisations and institutions: bilateral and multilateral development agencies, international non-governmental organisations, women's funds, large private foundations, individual giving and small private foundations, and corporate philanthropy. New funding opportunities are also highlighted - such as increasing interest in funding gender equality from some bilateral donors like Ireland and Spain. Finally, the report looks at strategies for building resources for the women's movement: building collective power, engagement with donor allies, supporting feminist leaders, and creating autonomous funding.
