Women’s rights and their participation in politics have been through many ups and downs in Egypt’s recent history. Since 2000 and up until revolution broke out in 2011, there have been many legal reforms introduced in the hope that they would give women greater equality to men. However many argue that these reforms have not gone far enough.

Use this timeline as it explores reforms introduced to improve women’s rights as well as outlining the social and political changes in Egypt that have affected/ influenced them. Introduction of reforms to the family court, divorce and marriage in Egypt are examined and women’s participation in politics before and after the revolutions of 2011 and 2013 explored.
