‘Unpicking Power and Politics for Transformative Change’ will critically examine the practices and politics shaping accountability in health systems from the local to the global levels.

The Impact Initiative is convening a three-day workshop with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), the Unequal Voices project, Future Health Systems, and the Open Society Foundation, where a new IDS programme on strengthening accountability for health equity will be launched.

Held at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), this major international workshop will bring together approximately 60 key researchers (including ESRC-DFID grant holders), practitioners, advocates, opinion formers and policy influencers.

The workshop will bring diverse voices together from the health sector and beyond, encouraging fresh connections and unexpected conversations among researchers studying power, politics and the management of health system change, practitioners implementing interventions for strengthening accountability, activists involved in health rights advocacy and experts in research communication and knowledge mobilisation, together with others working to strengthen healthcare delivery in government, the private sector and civil society. The event aims to catalyse innovative thinking and partnerships to strengthen national and international efforts to tackle health inequities and secure universal health coverage.

Thematic sessions will provide opportunities for the presentation of cutting-edge findings from research and practice, combined with experience-sharing and group discussion and are designed to map out emerging agendas for research, policy and practice in key areas such as:

  • Accountability for health equity: reflections on an emerging framewor
  • Health Accountability Politics in Time
  • New Actors; Future Accountabilities
  • Making Accountability Real: Implementing UHC in Africa
  • Transforming Health Accountabilities
