25/06/2020 - 15:00 to 16:30

Join us for a virtual learning journey with members of the YOUR World Research Partnership and their Ethiopian partners, the Impact Initiative and researchers supported by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Department for International Development (DFID). The event will explore the opportunities and challenges of engaging children and youth and other communities with national policy formulation.

Focusing on the YOUR World Research partnership, and its collaboration with Ethiopian partners, this webinar will share learning from the organization of a National Youth Seminar in 2019. Around 100 people participated, including 50 young people who shared their experiences of seeking ways out of poverty with government officials and senior decision makers. Officials from the Ministry of Women, Children and Youth attending the event affirmed the importance of listening to young people’s priorities, and said that the research discussed at the seminar would contribute to the re-design of the national youth policy. The Ministry of Women, Children and Youth have now released their National Youth Policy.

In this virtual debate, Vicky Johnson from the University of the Highlands and Islands will facilitate a panel of Ethiopian child rights practitioners, researchers and policy actors who will share their learning around engaging the lived experiences of marginalised youth with Ethiopia’s national youth policy. Then grantholders from the Joint Fund for Poverty Alleviation and the Raising Learning Outcomes Programme, along with campaigners, policy actors and donors, will be invited to discuss their experiences of seeking to empower the voices of youth and other marginalised groups.

Panellists include:

  • Anannia Admassu (Director, CHADET)
  • Amid Ahmed (Researcher, YOUR World Research/Addis Ababa University, Institute of African Studies)
  • Firehiwot Seyoym Tadese (Disability Advocate)
  • Matiyas Assefa Chefa (Director-General Youth Participation, Ministry of Women, Children and Youth – Ethiopia)

This event has taken place and registration is now closed.
