Chris Tapscott held posts as director of the Institute for Management and Development Studies at the University of Transkei, and director of the Namibian Institute for Social and Economic Research and Head of the Social Sciences Division at the University of the Western Cape in 1994 as the founding director of the post-graduate School of Government and is presently Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences. A sociologist, Tapscotts research and publishing career has spanned a broad spectrum of topics in the field of development and governance in both rural and urban contexts. He has also written extensively on the challenges of state and societal transformation in the newly democratised South Africa. His current research focus is on the local state and the political and organisational challenges which this poses to the development of substantive participatory democracy in countries of the south.
